A magnifier is a great garden tool. This is a 10x loupe left over from pre-digital slide photography days. We have others purchased from science stores. With it we can identify this caterpillar as Euonymus webworm and thus learn all we need to decide whether and how to control it. (It's a pest that's almost always around to do a little damage but occasionally has a population boom. Then, it can strip a shrub... but it happens late in the growing season when the shrub almost always has plenty of reserve energy, to be able to simply shrug off the loss.)
